Fuel Gauge....?

Yesterday we finished up all the electrics on my tourer, but I noticed that when the ignition was turned on the fuel gauge was reading full on an empty tank. I did not have time to investigate further, but has anybody got any clues please?

My MM gauge does the same thing and I havent been able to find a cure for it yet, if you have any luck with yours let me know!

What does it read on a full tank?
My gauge read empty all the time until I fitted a new gauge

With a one wire system:
first disconnect the wire to the gauge, and look what the meter is showing.
Does he shows the same, connect him on a blank metal part and look at the meter.
sometimes, the tank is isolated after a rebuild, so he does not have a good contact to the body.
With a two wire system, disconnect, look, and connect to each other, and see what is the difference.

fuel gauges are in most of the time resistors, between maximum resistance, and zero ohm.

my fuel guage as not working properly and i removed the sender unit from the tank,it was all clogged up with sediment and worked ok when cleaned up,also check that the sender unit arm is not bent unusually as it will give a false reading.

I got mine sorted out today! The arm on the sender had previously ben seized and I had freed it up hoping that it would start working. It didnt and I got fed up and left it as it was today.

I was out in the MM today at a friends garage helping him with the brakes on his van and Stevey asked him if he had an early sender to try. Tried this and it worked!!!!! I then took the top cover off my old one and found that there was a broken wire inside it, this is a very thin wire than probably broke when I freed up the sender arm. Hopefully this can be repaired and kept as a spare. Will add a pic of this soon.

I reckon I must have bought about 7 fuel gauges over the last couple of years so was barking up the wrong tree

Here is a pic of said fuel gauge with line line put on to show were the broken wire is. As I said its very fine and Im not sure if it can be repaired but worth a try.
