Re: May be too much?
Ahh -but we were told the dizzy was sparking at first, so it certainly wasn't the coil then ....... If there had been NO sparks I would have suggested trying another coil..... Although - generally it's the connections - not the actual coil itself - UNLESS it's a modern replacement, which seem to have a poor reputation.

Re: May be too much?
Yes yes, I obviously broke the coil by doing something to it
Preliminary tests show the coil is not working, so tomorrow I shall fit a new coil (if you think I could manage it) and see what happens.

Re: May be too much?
Glad to hear that the problem is now identified. Well done.
Re: May be too much?
Coil is indeed straightforward to fit - be sure to get the correct one for the car, and to connect it right way round. Note that modern coils have a terrible reputation for quality/reliabilty....... I sincerely hope it fixes your car - but you did say the dizzy was sparking way back at the start of all this - so clearly the coil WAS ok at that time - yet you had been brought home with a non functioning engine.....

Re: May be too much?
Well, I originally tried sticking a tampon in there (being a girl I have loads of them hanging about the place), and that didn't work, then I remembered how you can run a clock off a potato, and so I tried a baby pearl potato, which didn't work either.
Luckily a man came round with an ignition coil for a Morris Minor and now Martha works!
N.B. - All of the above is a lie, I got a coil, and fitted it myself, and now Martha works.

The way to a man's heart may be making food, but the way to my heart is buying me car parts!
Come read about my Minor at An American Moggie.

Yes, I'm glad you got it fixed although I wondered what was going on when I landed on your post at the point above.
I usually find the joy of solving a frustrating problem far outweighs the anguish it caused in the first place.
Don't mind BMC, he really is one of the most helpful on here, very methodical and despite being a Scot he can even be a bit "jocular" at times.

Well duh..then I remembered how you can run a clock off a potato, and so I tried a baby pearl potato, which didn't work either.
Now, several of them, connected in serial, might have worked.

What would Macgyver do..?

Or p'raps a baking potato would have worked. I'm pretty sure a can of new potatoes would have been fine, but we don't have any of them. Tsk!
We are all happy to have Martha back, mum especially so, she gets a lift to & from work
