Is this legal?...Ebay

Post by PhilR »

Saw this on Ebay. Seems to be inferring that if the car does not sell, then the owner will scrap it and the documents sold seperately later!

"owner has docs and wants £700 for this part"
Dont think there's much need to worry, £700 for some illegal paperwork...

it is a bit of a myth that it is illegal to sell reg docs vin plate mots insurance docs etc,you can sell anything other than banned substances ,drugs ,firearms, explosives etc or anything which require a licence to sell ,the illegal bit comes into play when the buyer then uses the vehicles identity to ring a vehicle, or otherwize decieve someone into believing that the car is original or taxed or tested. It may be frowned upon to advertise car documents but unless you could prove that the seller fully intends to conspire with the buyer to use the docs for illegal reasons then he breaks no laws.I'm sure there are genuine collectors of vin plates etc out there. Never the less can't see how £700 could be justified for something that can't be used legally, unless if the vehicle is taxed the owner could get the number transfered onto a retention certificate so maybe the number is worth £700

^^^^ Absolutely correct. Nice 'mantlepiece ornament'...... but that number may be a non-transferrable number, worth checking before buying.

Not in every case as it's against ebay rules to advertise the following for sale:

Current blank Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plates, and stamped VIN or TAG plates that have been removed from the vehicle

V5, logbook or similar vehicle registration documents unless they are being listed with the vehicle

Legal to sell such items, unless against rules of a particular advertising outlet?
