now that the oil is down to just the occasional drip into the nice clean jar, Its time to disconnect the speedo to gearbox connection.[frame]Image[/frame]

Grab the plastic hex in a vice and try to lever the seal out obviously damage to seal doesn't matter as your changing it, but be carfull with the plastic housing

Another good way is drill into the rubber seal vertically with a small drill then screw a self tapping screw into the hole. You can now lever under the screw head carefully useing the plastic housing's top edge as the fulcrum, thats how i'd do it
Also i'd put some sort of gasket, sealer or ptfe tape on the plastic threads that go into the gearbox to seal it there. Unless it has a seal washer on it.

thanks for that advice, worked really well. The old oil seal shown here is very different to it's new counterpart, the old one has a metal band around its outer circumference and a spring in its centre.[frame]Image[/frame]

On this (dutch) site, there is a list from different types of oil seals:

In most of the times, it is no problem to change one type by another type.
type BASL is my favorite, when the axle is in contact with the outside from the car.
Some types are easy to mount, some types not.

I couldn't see the type of new seal you had in your pic. I was going to say that with "lip" type oil seals like those there is a right and wrong way round for them to go.
Use the old one for reference, the little spring side of the seal would go towards the fluid it's sealing IE towards the gearbox. If you look at the "lip" it's like a wiper blade's profile and should point TOWARDS the gearbox. thereby "wiping" the oil back into where it came from IE the gearbox.
If it's fitted wrong way it will let oil past

If this side goes outside the box IE the speedo cable screws on here then it's in the right way

thats useful advice there, thanks everyone, the speedo is back in and connected up with sealant, so far no leaks.
Next up was the horn that went on in two seconds, I had already identified the wires, tagged them up and they just slid on.
The new horn surprised me, being made of plastic, still, at least it wont rust.[frame]Image[/frame]

item 26 on the rolling list, Bob mentioned that there were no split pins fitted to the front suspension damper connection, he's got good eyes.[frame]Image[/frame]

I've never seen a double hook for lashing rope to fitted so low down, was it like that before the renovation?

didn't drill the holes myself, thats not to say they are in the correct place. I'll have to do some research and see if they were ever issued in this position, though at this late stage of the restoration, I doubt I'll change them now.[frame]Image[/frame]
