All standard 1098 filters were/are the same size. Two possibilities: You have been sent the wrong filter, or someone has fitted a non-standard housing. Another thought - has your filter got the spring and plate at the bottom? It could be that someone lost those bits and then got an element that was full height - no good at all, but just an idea.

Quick question regarding filters, I ordered a new filter from charles ware, it is the screw on type but it is half the height of the one fitted.

Does the physical size of the filter matter as long as the fitting is the same?

Yes - size matters - especially with filters. Small filter = easily clogged up and high pressure drop through the filter. The bigger the better....... Austin engine makes no odds - they are all A series...... As long as the plate and spring butt the element up to the top plate - it's fine.
