On a saloon?
There should be a strap type thing at the top accessible from in the boot, then tilt it forward from within the car and lift it up.
Removing the base may help, I thing there may be a couple of screws under the front edge, otherwise it's just wedged in there.

My rear seat ('68 saloon) is held in with 2 wing nuts which are accessible from the boot - towards the top of the rear of the seat.

Haha, mine has got a slotted piece of angle on its back, near the top, and if you put a piece of wood through it, it clamps it to the bulkhead!
