Thanks Matt, the gauge isn't quite on total empty is it, I'll use this one and see if moving along the fuel scale doesn't free it up, But I have a base setting and I'll keep an eye on it, so many components still to pay for I'll leave that till later.
The ignition switch has just arrived. Time for that to go in next.[frame][/frame]

the starter switch, does anone know what order each wire should fit on the pegs at the back of the starter switch, the wire diagram I have isn't quite clear here.[frame][/frame]

thats odd, I only thought that ignition switches had four connections, unlike yours which has 7? I am assuming that yours must have an extra turn ( like in modern cars). how many times can you turn the key? is it the original switch?, im sort of thrown about the wiring on that switch, but im sure someone else will know about it and will be along shortly!

you are right, there are only four individual connections, but they have two studs each.The wire diagram from the workshop manual gives an approximation of the order for the four wires, one wire per brass connection. The key has only one turn so Ive no idea what the spare studs are for.

I'd suggest covering any terminals that aren't in use, maybe with old spade connectors?

Good tip, thanks Marky, now that I'm reducing the number of unconnected wires under the dash, ive done a little study of them, so I can sit down with the wire loom diagram and work out where they go.
in the glove compartment on the left side in two bullet connections are green red green white. 1x purple,1xlight green, 1x green red.

right side glove box coming from the loom that enters the bulkhead. single wires 1xblack 1x purple 1x dark blue 1x blue red

I have the wires from the indicator and horn, oversprayed but still readable as 1x green 1x brown black 1x green white, 1x green brown and 1x blue black.[frame][/frame]

that just leaves this lone red wire that does not have a bullet on the end, probably as it has to slide through the slide switch for the speedo illumination bulbs, that Ive still to purchase yet.
Thats all the wires in the dash, though I still have the engine bay, horn headlights ect to sort, but one step at a time.

I think you will find the engine bay wiring a little easier.Once you have laid the loom out, the length of the individual wires,
gives you a pretty good clue as to where they go.
I always find that labelling the wires ...colour and what it feeds/ connects to...whilst you study the wiring diagram, works for me.i make small cardboard "labels" and fix with thin plastic gardening wire or pipe cleaners, twisted around the wire.Do the whole lot and then attach.A quick review of the work whilst double checking against the diagram again.Job done.

you can get a slide switch from maplins for next to nothing!

in this pic you are missing the rubber ring round the loom where it comes through the bulkhead, judging by the screws, it looks like you already have the triangle on there.


dont forget the carpet underlay while your in there

it you have a long purple wire that doesnt have a home, it goes up the A pillar to the interior light

thanks Ash, the interior light has three wires coming down the A pillar on the right side of the dash,one purple, one black one brown, I'm not sure which purple wire to attach it to, there are two under the dash in the new loom. I'm guessing it's the right one, as that has a single black wire with it.
The rubber donut that protects the loom through the dash bulkhead you mentioned is there fitted. Difficult to see in the picture.

these are the interior light wires purple brown and black at the light in the ceiling of the cab roof, bit of overspray, but still identifyable.[frame][/frame]

then three more I'd not included earlier on, the dip switch wires blue yellow, blue, blue red. I'm starting to eliminate some of these, it feels like solving a crossword.[frame][/frame]

Dipswitch wiring...blue from the lighting switch, OK.blue / red to the dipped headlight OK.
Blue / yelow ? Should be the Blue/white to headlight main beam. Discoloured wiring I guess.
There's a surprise after 40 odd years !!

Thanks again Bob. I found the red and white wires that feed the speedo clock as panel lights when I rooted through this scrap loom, I take it that is the remains of the slide switch.[frame][/frame]

In a word " yes "." Red/whites to the panel lights and a plain red.
The slider switch ,one cannot describe as being " of robust construction ".My pal's one was smashed/ dis-intergrated beyond repair.

Bull Motif list a slide switch, I'll order one from them. My dig through the junk box containing my scrap loom proved worthwhile. I came across this scrap indicator lever and it's attached wires, it looks to me that there is no purple black wire going in there as per the wire diagram in the Haynes manual, but the brown black looks like it leads to the horn area at the top, so Ive connected my brown black to the purple black using a single bullet connector.[frame][/frame]
