Fuel pump not working

Post by Alex'n'Ane »

Basically I have fitted a second hand fuel pump, which was working when removed. When all connected up it ticks, but doesn't pump fuel. I took it apart (the 6 screws) and the plastic film diaphragm piece appears ok, and there are no obvious blockages inlet to outlet (can blow air through). I have cleaned the points at the top of the fuel pump, but was unsure as to how 'bent' the contact strip should be, as in at which point it should and shouldn't be contacting the other points. (I dont know if this is the issue or related). With a different fuel pump in it all works fine and pumps fuel as it should.
What could be the issue with the pump?

this might be stating the obvious, but are the pipes connected up to the inlet and the outlet right?

its been done in the past

I dont even think you could connect them up wrong? :S on this pump which is a later type with 2 contacts, the inlet and outlet are at different points compared to the working single contact design, so this means the outlet points downwards and is below the inlet, but i cant see why this would be an issue?

humm, well from what i recollect with pumps, there are two varities. the pull type, which a standard morris one is and the push type, which pushes fuel from the back of the car to the front.

you might have the push type instead of the pull type.

hopefully that will make some sense, if not, bmcecosse will be along soon and be able to come up with the solution straight away

Such faith........but fraid not! Wrong pipe connections seems possible - but that is assuming the pump ticks away dementedly when connected up - but just doesn't deliver ??

But the fuel intake is a threaded bit onto which the pipe screws, and the outlet is just a push on fit.
