Little help? I've broken down
Ok I've broken down.
It seems to be my fuel pump, it's not ticking at all like usual, I've cleaned it and done the points but still nothing!
Any help would be massively appreciated!

Are you sure that there is power to the fuel pump? Check the wire to the terminal.
Is the earth wire connected?
Have you hit it with a hammer (gently)? I am serious.
Have you got your breakdown recovery membership card?
If all else fails - new fuel pump

If the carb is full - it won't tick.... Take the delivery pipe off the carb and switch on/off briefly to see if fuel appears. If it does - start looking at the ignition system for the 'breakdown' cause. If no fuel appears - clean the points again - and yes as above - do check there is power at the pump....

Ok removed delivery pipe and nothing.
Done the points and cleaned everything, still nothing.
How do I check for power? Can I put the earth side to black on the battery and the positive side to red on battery to see if it works?

Ok, fuel pump works. Tested it and it works. So there is no power getting to it, I'm useless at electrical stuff how do I trace it and sort it?!

The wire going to the screw on terminal is the live feed. With ignition on, use a test meter set to volts to see if you have 12v here.
Also, check the earth which is the wire that is connected to the body of the pump and the mounting bolts.
The fuel pump will work if it has a live and an earth!

Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Re: Little help? I've broken down
I'm an idiot.
Apparently I have one of those fuel pump cut off switches.
Last owner didn't tell me, and as it's my first Morris I didn't know they existed, until I tested it myself and broke down 500 yards down the road.
Useful.
Anyways, fuel pump got a good cleaning which is never a bad thing! And I learnt something.
Thanks again boys! I'll be back soon with more stupidity for you...

I was going to ask if that was a possibility - but discounted it as being too crazy to consider...........

Re: Little help? I've broken down
Well Ianeychief I am sure you feel very silly but I can assure you not as silly as me!
We had a fuel cut off switch, had been driving along nicely and suddenly our saloon starting cutting out. Checked all sorts of things and gave up - called the AA who did various checks and then asked if there was a cut off switch. Very red faced we said yes, he fiddled with it and hey presto life! Hubby was rather rude to me for while convinced I must have pushed the switch somehow. However next time out it did the same thing = Faulty switch which in the end we just bypassed.
They are very useful items so long as they work!

Re: Little help? I've broken down
I literally had heard whisper of them on here and didn't even consider I had one!
It works fine, I've tested it throughly ;)
But yea how very embarrassing, I've been driving along loads of times fiddling with that switch...
Every days a school day!

Re: Little help? I've broken down
They weren't fitted as standard, they are an 'aftermarket' theft deterrent. They can be located in various places but it's not a good idea for people to provide details on an open forum.

Re: Little help? I've broken down
In fact, can the powers at be delete this thread so theres little information about said security device?
Or is that paranoid?!

Re: Little help? I've broken down
Well it's generally common knowledge that fuel cut off switches exist and are available to purchase for most cars, not just Minors. It's not a good idea to discuss security deterrents in detail on internet forums eg describing what a hidden security device looks like or where it may be situated, or describing ways that security measures can be by-passed etc but this thread doesn't do that.
Under the circumstances I don't see the need to delete the thread, and it could be useful for others who might have a similar problem and don't know what the cause is. Plus it is useful for new owners to know about the type of security deterrents that are available. I have however, for the reasons stated above, deleted the section of Plin's post where she has provided the location of the cut-off switch in her car.
