My projects new wheels - banded steels

Post by singleton »

Here are a few pics of my newly aquired wheels for my 68 saloon. Been trying to buy these for about the last 10 years from a local bloke I know who had them on his saloon a fair few years ago which i used to see when I was a young lad, he let somebody else buy them tho, but to cut a long story short my dad knew the chap who had bought them and I got in touch and went to have a look. I thought they may have been wide van rims but soon realised they are banded steels which must have been done many years ago as i have known of these wheels for 15+ years. Looks like people have been rubbing them down to try and find the magic lp numbers before they have found there way to me! Im not too concerned that they are not genuine wide rims because I paid the right money for them and they look exactly how I wanted them to with quite a deep dish look from the outside. The standard of the work is good and I know the car they ran on for years with no issues. Im going to have them blue to match the trafalgar blue body of the car with the outer lip painted white just to be different. I like the blend of a deep dish wide look, wider tyres etc but with the look of origionality with the centre cap etc. Im sure these wont be everyones cup of tea but im well chuffed with them![frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

this is an excellent look! i agree with the wide wheel look on minors, i recently enquired about banding my steels before i saw this page and got a quote of over £300 and they wouldnt of even refurbished them.... i've decided to buy some rostyles and paint the centers black. have you got any pictures of the car with the wheels on or is it not at that stage yet?

Here are a couple of pics of the wheels on the car, I have given them a coat of red oxide, think i will end up having them white in the end. Paid £225 for all 5 with tyres, 4 tyres are good the spare is a remould so I dont think i got a bad deal really.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

These wheels look great - and you will find the car is MUCH more stable on the wider tyres.

Going to be painted white in the end, I just painted them in red oxide for the moment will be primering them soon. Amazing the differance it's makes to the whole look of the car just putting these wheels on.

These wheels was sold on ebay about 4 months ago maybe 5 and i won them. I won them as Van wheels and sadly they wasnt so in the end i didnt buy them. Glad they have gone to a good home, i had a good look at them and they was made, ie banded along time ago, going of the surface rust on them and the condition of the paint. They would look fab if you got them sandblasted and powder coated, i love wheels powder coated, powder coating gives a superb and durable finish that lasts. :D

Yes I remember them being on eBay and the chap I bought them from said they were not what you thought they were. I know the history of the wheels because I know the bloke who had them before the chap you dealt with. Did you get any van rims or are you still on the hunt? I could see when I got hold of these wheels someone had been rubbing them trying to find the magic lp numbers.

I like them! 8) 8)

Looked into it myself some time back for my last minor - getting quotes upwards of £300 put me off (as someone else found above!).
Makes a new set from Midland wheels or similar seem affordable. lol.
What would Macgyver do..?

The only strange thing is that the same picture, and advertisement is on a dutch side, on the same moment...

Different location, same description and picture.....
I saw this before with a sidevalve engine.

All wheels in second primer coat now, will be looking good when top coat goes on. Im tempted to not bother with standard centre caps, might try and see if something like marina tc small centre nut cover type things will go on or something.[frame]Image[/frame]
