Centre Crossmember

Hi.Has anyone had any experience of repairing or replacing the centre crossmember.i.e.cost and how big a job would it be if i took it to a body repairers.the crossmember has corrosion just below the passenger side torsion bar mounting.I think i have seen an end piece advertised that can be fitted!!.any ideas.Cheers.

Replacing the whole thing is about the biggest job on a standard car as all the suspension needs to be undone to unload the torsion bars.

How about a picture of the affected area?

Hi.Marky B.The corroded area is at the bottom of the crossmember.just below the torsion bar mount.I have seen an end piece to fit this corroded area on Charles Wares web site.this may be an easier fix than replacing the whole crossmember.i assume the corroded area obviously has to be removed first.sorry i hav'nt a photo.Thanks

This link may help: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 15#p341821. I replaced the crossmember in my Mog, and it wasn't as hard a job as it seems, just tedious and time-consuming. If you have basic welding knowledge, a MIG welder, an oxy-acetylene cutting torch, an air chisel, and some confidence and patience, you can easily do it yourself.

A professional will do the job right the first time, but expect to spend perhaps £1000 for his labor.

I'm assuming you are asking because the car failed it's MOT, is the crossmember actually perforated?
MOT testers vary a lot, some can't wait to fail a classic car, others use experience and knowledge to decide.

If you have a phone with a camera, and a laptop with Bluetooth just pair them up and transfer pictures that way.

It is a pretty big job - usually done with the car tipped on it's side, which means some stripping down/removal of fluids.... Some have done it working from below - it's a job I'm dreading doing some day! The replacement end sections would be ok PROVIDED there is good metal in the rest of the crossmember to weld to..... This may not be the case.

Hi.All Thanks for all the replys.the mot is not up untill September.but as i was under the car changing the clutch/gearbox i noticed that the crossmember was corroded just were the torsion bar is mounted to the crossmember. i am sure i can get away with just getting an end section fitted.

The torsion bars are quite far inboard.........but then I'm not sure how big the crossmember-end repair sections are.

Hi.The end repair sections of the crossmember appear to nearly reach the propshaft centre hole.

Many Thanks to all.I Am going to book it into a Morris repairers in Manchester and the price seems to be o.k.for an end piece to be fitted.Cheers All. :D
