Where does the engine earth strap go??

Post by beero »

Just putting my project back together and I can't find the engine earth strap, in fact, I don't even remember removing it.
So I will have to buy a new one but where do they go?

On the Series MM between the earth strap terminal on the batttery box and the rear head stud
On the M1000 between the gearbox and gearbox cross member

i've seen a fair few with an extra earth strap from the rearmost exhaust manifold stud to one of the bolts that holds the pump to the side of the battery box.

Thanks all.
Mike, I would have remembered if it was on the gearbox because I would have thought that odd. Perhaps it never had one, it does have a replacement ribbed gearbox. I suppose it earthed via the restraining cable that stops the engine/gearbox moving forward (or the choke cable)

that earth strap on the box normally goes between one of the bolts that holds the gearbox cross member to the chassis rail, and a bolt that goes into the gearbox casing where the clutch relay shaft would go if it were a left hand drive vehicle.

i can take some pics if it helps.

It doesn't matter where it goes - as long as you have one!

That's right I suppose, BMC, I've got 2 on the MG, it cured it's reluctance to start.

As long as it's properly earthed (grounded, we say) betwen the battery, the engine/gearbox and the body, you'll be OK.

Bolt it to the gearbox mounting bolts, clean off any rust on the bolts first to make sure you get a good earth!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

It's easier/more obvious to put the earth (ground!) wire on the engine and to one of the front engine mount tower bolts.
