Which engine is this??

Post by mistarkos »

Good day all.

I have a Morris Minor Series MM, side valve without water pump, Right Hand Drive and I would like some one tell me exactly which engine do I have. Is it the 948 or 800 ??

On the new registration form it says 848cc. I also have the very first original registration form the Colony of Cyprus from 1950's which says: Horse Power 8.00 Date of registration 31.05.1950

On the black metal label inside the hood it says the following:
Type: MNR/S
Car No: SMM/ 47563
Engine No: 45961

But on the new registration form it says:
Engine No: 01522

So I guess the engine has been replaced by another one. Can someone tell me from the above which engine do I have? Is it the 800 or 948 ? I'm posting some photos of the engine and car. Please note that the Air Silencer filter is removed
Can you also tell me which carburettor does the engine has? Is it the H1 SU carb?

Thank you all.

The engine you have fitted is a 918cc side valve type USHM2 which is the early engine and the correct one for your car. The carb is an SU H1, 1 1/8 in. There should be an accelerater cable stop bracket located in the two holes in front of the dizzy. The new reg docs are wrong. There should be a brass disc on the block with the engine no. behind the dynamo

Thank you both for the info.
Ok, I might sound silly now but what an accelerater cable stop bracket does exactly and what is the dizzy?

Sorry I don't know much about engines, I'm just trying to learn my mogy.

Dizzy = Distributor
Cable stop bracket holds the end of the accelerator cable. At the moment you appear to have some sort of of botch

Anyone knows where I can find a radiator cap like in the photos above? All I found is the smaller one. I can't find the bigger size.

thank you.

Correction.
The engine fitted in the car is a type USHM3 with a blanking plate at the front for a water pump but with a USHM2 cylinder head. It also appears to have a bit of old exhaust pipe for an oil filler pipe (improvisation). The correct pipe and cap can be seen in fussyoldfart's photo.

Can you please tell me how many liters is the radiator and how much is the pressure? I'm looking for a radiator cap and I can't find anywhere. :(

13.5 pints of coolant, always use antifreeze to prevent corroson to alloy parts.
Radiator pressure cap 4psi, both caps.

Thank you mike.

Is it better to use antifreeze mixtures of the ethylene glycol or glycerine type? Not the alcohol base?

Here is a picture of my engine when I was preparing to take it apart. You must disregard the aluminum cylinder head as that is different from your car but the straight oil filler pipe is plain to see. Actually I thought the long twisted filler on your car was a very practical modification as it puts the end within easier reach of your hand.[frame]Image[/frame]

Thank you Darrell. I will ask my mechanic if we can fix that.. to make it as it was before. If I leave it as it is will it cause any any problems with engine?

Mike do you think I can find the above parts to replace mine?
The accelerator cable stop bracket, Oil filler pipe and cap and the USHM3 cylinder head?

Mike. I'm probably wrong, but, the side water jacket is Vedette, isn't it? That might explain the oil filler pipe, too.

Good eye Rob,

That water jacket, whatever it is, would interfere with a straight oil filler pipe. I wonder how many other cars used the 918 or a variant of it? I always thought it was just Morris.

1947 Vedette MK 11. The Vedette MK IV was based on USHM3 engine and introduced in 1952. I will try to get some photos at the Thames Trad Boat Rally in a couple of weeks. MK III & V = Lifeboat versions. MK VI = 948 engine
The other possibility is ex military generator engine, except that the water jacket did not have a dynamo bracket and was cast not alloy.
Anyway you will be able to identify it from the brass plaque

Sorry, Yes. The 30cm x 5cm x 5cm piece on the right side of the engine is not Morris car but may be from a Morris boat engine or a Morris military engine. Maybe your engine was born as a military engine and changed to a car engine by putting pieces of car engine on it. The big engine 'block' is about 1951, the head is about 1949 and the pieces on the side are maybe military. If the engine runs OK then you have a good engine. Morris 918 ngines came with long studs and nuts for the cylinderhead but you've got bolts. Again, no problem but it is different.[frame]Image[/frame]
