Morris Dealer. North London 1960's

Post by richardb1060 »

hi there.

My father owned two Travellers back in the 1960's. I recall he bought them from a dealership in Stamford Hill . North London. i've attached a map of where this was located (Morris House) in case anyone is interested. Does anyone know the name of the dealership?

Incidently the registrations of the cars were NMF 649 and PNK 685 H[frame]Image[/frame]

I think it may have been Stewart & Ardern. They were the main Morris dealership in London at that time and most of their premises were called 'Morris House'.

From the dealer guide at the time:

London N15
Stewart & Ardern Ltd
Morris House, High Road
South Tottenham
Tel: Stamford Hill 1234

Franchises: morris distributors , retail dealer for wolseley, mg and riley and also listed as light and heavy morris commercial distributors.

Sounds like a lot of vehicles would have been distributed from these premises back in the day. Dont think the company exists anymore but along with kennings looked like it was a big player in the bmc dealerships circle according to info in my book. cheers

I think that is correct, I know they were going until at least 1971 and I understand that Gordon Stewart was a good friend of William Morris. Gordon Stewart had complete control as S&A were the sole London distibutor with the distribution centre in The Vale in Acton. My own Traveller was supplied by the branch at London Road, Staines in May 1970. This was the dealership that supplied the final Convetible the August before. If you do a Heritage search on Minors registered in London, the dealer destination seems to always come up with Acton address.

Can anyone add anything to this?
