To get an age related number you normally need some more proof. I would firstly get a Heritage certificate and that will tell you date of build and despatch to the dealers, it will also have colour and trim spec that should tie in with what you have. Then, you,ll need the car inspected by a club official to verify that it is what it calims to be!! Dont expect this to be a quick process, good luck!!

Go to www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk and then to the online shop and click on heritage certificate. (if this doesnt link google heritage certificate and it should be the first link!) The cost is abot £35.00 plus postage, I got one last year for the lowlight as it had been issued with an age related number, with this and some other documents I was able to get the original number reinstated.

Re: How old is my car ?
body number def dates it to late '61ish!Garym wrote:I have a minor and I would like to try to identify it's age.
It has no plates and because it has been extensively rebuilt,it has no chassis number. The only numbers it has is a BME plate, whatever this is ,with the number BME 347157 ,which is on the passengers side bulkhead and there is two other sets of numbers each of six digits each.Would I be able to age date it by these numbers by any chance ? The DVLA said that if I could find it's age, they could then issue me with an age related plate.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Hi
Do you have any glass, if you have, look for any Triplex marks.
These are dots above or below the word TRIPLEX, and or TOUGHENED or ZEBRAZONE.
This sequence helps determine the approx. age.
Let us know if there is any marks on the glass, and I will look for the info.
This info, helped me determine my car was a 1955, not 1956, as I had been told, Log book wrong too.
Regards Win

I was going by the chap who originally posed the question; "how old is my car?".
"BME 347157" dates the car to '61ish....
I have notes on fellow '61 saloon "BME 347660".
To be honest I was rather puzzled it was being dated to '63!!

Both Minor's built at much the same time - both 86**** chassis nos with 347*** "BME" numbers - the DoFR of the other one is 1961, so would conclude they are of a similar vintage.
Yes, there's a PO van about which was built in late '71 but didn't get registered until '74 - ie; an "M" reg!!!
If you've a minor would you let me know its date of regn/chassis/body & engine nos please?

Re: How old is my car ?
You have to decide what is original on your car and what could have been changed. Removal of trafficators, fitting of later indicators, side lights and tail lights are common updates so are not reliable methods of dating a car. Neither is the engine size.
The last major update was 64 so look for items that would have been changed at that time and would be difficult to DIY change, ie clap hand wipers, circular heater, stainless speedo surround panel, pull switches. Two spoke steering wheel, although a lot of people prefer the three spoke wheel.
