Noisy Gearbox

Post by Tes 1 »

Hello All.(New Member).I Have a 1956 minor 948cc.which has a noisy first gear.Would it be practical to remove and repair the box(I am a Mechanic) or buy a reconditioned one(£400 ouch!!) i don't fancy buying a secondhand one untested. and can i get the spare parts if i need them .Cheers.

Welcome to the forum! All 1st gears are 'noisy' because they are straight cut - how bad is it ? I don't believe new 1st gears for that box are available now -and in any case it's likely the laygear is damaged too. Repair is unlikely to be economic even if you can find the parts. Either pick up another 948 box, or much better - get the later/stronger 1098 'ribbed cage' box and fit that!

John Evans in Hayling Island is your man for recon gearboxes- He does the boxes for some of the main suppliers. A recon box from John is £315 and a very nice person to deal with. I picked up a spare box from him two weeks ago.

Re 'mods required' - this comes up time and time again - I do wish someone who has done it would publish a definitive account. I 'think' it's a straight fit - but I haven't actually done it myself. Hopefully someone who knows will be along in a minute.....
