Odometer stuck on 000000 after going round the clock
This week I just bought this lovely Traveller which I'd always dreamed of and had it delivered on a transporter. It was showing 99999 on the clock and tonight we did about 8 miles but nothing's shifting away from all the 0s. Any ideas please? Is this what should happen and do we need to do something with it?[frame]

Looks like a very smart traveller!
The speedos often stick, sometimes even if the car has just sat for a few weeks, on one of mine it sticks, then clicks and tries to move for about 10 miles every time the 1000 changes. First thing I would try is thumping the top of the dash with your fist to see if that frees it up. Try driving it a short distance to see, another thump if necessary! If this doesnt work take out the speedo and check the cable isnt broke.

Too many Minors so little time.....

Obviously whoever supplied the car has wound on the mileometer to hide the previous mileage - and in doing so has broken it. You need another speedo now...... I would also get them to adjust the bonnet catch - it's not properly shut!

That clearly means the car has passed its "best before date". Since it will be no good now you might as well give it to me
Actually, it seems probable that someone has "messed with things" inside the speedo. I have done that in trying to get a used replacement instrument to read the same as the one I took out. The carcass is lying on my workbench reading 00000.0 but it will not turn up more than the first .9 of a mile. There are expert shops that can repair these but they are expensive. It will be cheaper to find a replacement. Look for the small numbers on the face, in this case 1376 and get one with the same number which I believe is the turns-per-mile of the speedo cable. Different models had different speedo ratios to match gear ratios and tire sizes.[frame]

If you don't manage to get the speedo to work you'll be able to get a second hand replacement cheaply and it is a very simple job to replace it - there are a few threads on here explaining how to do it. Nice looking traveller

Drop into the national rally, there will be loads of speedos there.
Roy must have been distracted by the badly closing bonnet, and failed to condemn the headlight peaks (pedestrian slicers).

If it was purchased from a dealer I would contact them stating the problem. If it was bought privately you can choose to replace.
My car has trouble with all the 9's. 60,999..... It usually takes about 5/10 miles but it does eventually turn over and off it goes. It depends on how concerned with the accuracy of the mileage. I'm not so it doesn't bother me. It doesn't affect the speedo settings.

Re: Odometer stuck on 000000 after going round the clock
Thanks for all the helpful comments and sorry to say it's not been wound back. I know this because I have complete FSH as the car had one owner for 38 years and it's possible to check the mileage very accurately. At least I've got some idea of what to do now. Thanks for your offer, Charlie - my email is davidrhodes2019@btinternet.com. I'll attach another photo which will give some idea of the state of preservation of this car. At least you can't see whether the bonnet lid is adjusted properly in this one and the offensive kidney crunchers aren't in evidence either![frame]

Thanks for being so helpful Charlie - much appreciated. It's good to see some positive comment!
Re: Odometer stuck on 000000 after going round the clock
It's hard to believe it arrived with you at 99,999 - unless it's been stuck there for a while! Just pick up another speedo with same tpm and pop it in. I think if the bonnet was 'open' it would sit higher than that - I mention it so that you can check it carefully to make sure it is secure and won't fly up on you and smash against the screen....... And yes - I noticed the pedestrian leg slashers - but decided to not mention them this time........ I do firmly believe these things are extremely dangerous, completely useless and look just 'silly'! But - each to their own.......

Re: Odometer stuck on 000000 after going round the clock
Do you think that's a genuine 99,999 miles for the car then Dennis ?
