Brake lights

Post by Aeroplonk »

A little while ago I noticed my brake lights had stopped working and I found out that it was the switch that was faulty. I bought a brand new switch and fitted it. All seemed well. I have sinced noticed that the brake lights only come on if the pedal is pressed hard. I'm quite sure that the point at which the lights come is when the pedal is pressed harder than it would be in most situations when driving normally. Is there anything I can do to adjust the point at which the lights come on? Or any other ways of rectifying this situation?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

There is no adjustment on the switch. Most likely that the new switch is faulty. Also, a slim chance that there is air in the switch. It is worth priming the switch whilst holding it upside down, and also make sure that the union into which the switch is screwed has fluid up to the top of the thread. When refitting the switch, be careful not to drop brake fluid on the paintwork.

The bad news is that new switches are not as reliable as original ones.
Send it back and ask for another as it failed after such a short time.
It clearly wasn't of merchantable quality.

Air bubble won't make any difference - it's faulty.

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I'll be getting another switch then. I bought this one from ESM Morris Minors, are there better places to get one from?

The problem isn't with the supplier, it's with the place they get the parts from and that tends to be the same for all suppliers. I went through several switches a few years ago from a couple of Minor parts places before going to a local MG specialist. That switch has since been fine, I guess it was old stock.

It's worth sending the faulty one back to ESM though, otherwise they're not going to know there's a problem.

Well said, it wont do anyone any favours to just keep quiet about it.
