Horn Trouble

My wife took the minor out today to take the kids to school, and the horn was beeping on its own (The beeping kept on starting and stopping) then she saw smoke coming from the steering wheel.

I took the horn push off and the brass strip on the underside of it had a break in it, tho the break was not all the way through. I touched it and it is now split right through. and with the horn push refitted the horn wont work.

Anyone got any ideas to the problem. Mot due next month too.

If you can't get the brass strip out and solder it, then I suggest a new horn button. Expensive for what it is though at £25 from memory.

In addition to TomLS's advice, do check that the wiring at the top of the steering column ( should be Purple with black tracer ) is still sound, everywhere.
Look carefully for the evidence of blackened wire/ break in the insulation.Otherwise replacement of the horn button may not be the complete solution and another " puff of smoke " will make itself known.

If you don't care about 'originality' - you can just fit a push button to operate the horn.

I got the brass strip soldered. Worked straight away once fitted, tho it now is being a pain because sometimes it works when pressed and sometimes it doesn't.

mines like that ( although its an earlier horn push-three spoke wheel) soldered cable, works sometimes , sometimes not. But it has not yet let me down at the MOT centre!

Im gonna fit a push button on a bracket under the speedo, wire it seperate and disconnect original wiring, so thew button can be removed if need be without needing a permanent fixing.

I think for Mr MOT it needs to be clearly marked...
