I have a 1953 4 door split screen which was my first car (even though i am now 42), and has been in my parents garage for about 6 years unused, bad move admittedly. Until then i used it frequently and tried to take care of it. Having said that,3 wings are glass fibre, very little is original, the engine is a replacement 1098, i have the semaphore indicators but they are not fitted, and the colour is black, not the original.
Could somebody let me know what it may be worth please?? I would like to keep it although i now live in France, and therefore it would need renovating.....
Without having seen it I would still appreciate any advice regarding my dilemna: sell it/ renovate and then sell it/ renovate and keep it ....of course most of this revolves around its relative value , which I cannot guess.....
Thanks in advance ! Sarah

Re: Do I sell or do I restore???
Sarah,
It sounds like it is worth about £500 in its' current state. Renovated to a "useable driver" would increase its' value to around £1,500 but would most likely cost more than £1,000 if someone else did the work. To make the car worth much more would cost several thousand (welding, mechanical overhaul, tyres, exhaust, brakes, respray, interior, chrome etc.) and certainly much more than the car would be worth. Without seeing the car it is difficult to know exactly, but fibreglass wings, non original paint and six years standing etc. suggest it might need a lot of time and money just to get in a roadworthy condition. Fully renovated it might be worth about £4,000. To pay someone else to do a full renovation would cost in the order of £5,000-£10,000 (and maybe more!)
If you renovate yourself and you do like many of us, taking your time and searching out bargains (not as easy in France) and you already have some tools and equipment, you could make the car your hobby. I suspect that was not your plan...
I am sorry, I don't suppose this was what you would have liked to have heard, but I expect you probably knew in the back of your mind...

Re: Do I sell or do I restore???
Hello Sarah,
Where abouts in France are you and is your Minor over here ?
My Traveller and I are based in Brittany near Rennes where there are apparently about 10 Minors. If you are not to far away it would interesting to see your car.
I learnt to drive on a 1956 4-door (TDD 920) which appears to still be on the road (somewhere).
I've just seen on internet a restored late series 2 for sale in France advertised for 15000€ - expensive I feel but Minors do sell for more over here. It might be worth you considering restoration and keeping it and running it over here - getting it registered as a classic car here is not difficult.
Regards,
Michael

Re: Do I sell or do I restore???
Neil and Michael
Thank you so much for your helpful replies.
Unfortunately the car is in Dorset and I am in the French Alps, so i guess its looking like either I low load it out here and start a project (well it was a project since i bought it really!!!), or that i sell it for face value in Dorset.
I really appreciate your input and advice

Re: Do I sell or do I restore???
Update to my previous post with grateful thanks for the helpful replies...... 1953 4 door Split screen in Dorset needs to be sold, offers accepted. Would prefer to donate to a mechanics /charity training course so it can be restored and teach people at the same time. Does anyone have any information of any training schemes in the south west that could benefit ???
Thank you in advance
