Is it a camper or not?

Hi all, can anyone advise. I have just bought this

but am having trouble getting insurance for it because I thought it was a camper. Footman James tell me its not a camper under Eu law because there is no insulated water storage and no table to sit and eat etc etc. Were these authorised by Morris and is it a camper or an LCV with a bed in it. They wont insure me because it has a modefied back of unknowen origen. Has anyone else got one of these and what is it insured as? Any help please as im picking it up tomorow

Hi Paul.
It is a modified LCV - however that should have no bearing on getting insurance.
Many classic campers are 'post-production' conversions.

If you are a club member then I would recommend to contact the club office in Derby and ask them to help/intervene with FJ. As a club member you should expect to get insurance on the club scheme.
When it comes to modified vehicles there is of course a line somewhere that a 'club scheme' wont cover, however a classic van converted to a camper is not very out of the ordinary! As far as I know LCVs were also sold originally also with 'no back' to allow custom back ends, and tyhere are an abundance on non-standard back ends on pick ups, as well as well known conversions such as the tall 'gown van' and even ice cream vans.

Frizzell have offered insurance on it as a standard LCV for £109 which is fine till I send them photos for agreed value.
I wanted to stay with FJ as that is who insures the saloon no problem with all its mods, 1275, 5 speed etc. I was hoping they would do them both on a multie policy. The trouble is they tell you to tell them everything and if computer "says NO" thats it.
I will contact head office tomorow and see if they can help.

But as far as footman james are concern its a box on the back bet you can take plenty of photos not showing the box

Personally, I'd try a company specialising in modified vehicles. It might be worth joining the NSRA, as their insurance scheme covers all modified pre-'73 vehicles, so the camper meets that criteria.

Well, just got back from picking it up. Adrian flux insured it for £109. But after explaining it was a van. The docks were emailed to me with travaler so i phoned and and said try again. The second email said morris minor 1000. Third time it said LCV . When I got home a forth set of docks were waiting for me. That said morris minor
Then they send an email with a satisfaction survay . Still home now . Best bit when I asked Col Strawbridge who he insures it with he said........any one........Footman James

go here http://sbmcc.co.uk/forum/re had same problem on three home conversions, to qualify as a camper look up on that site the dvla requirements,fitted bed cooker water supply and table able to be fixed to the inside of the vehicle etc.Then photos off to dvla requesting that the reg doc be changed to camper van,some insurance cos want engineers report if it is not a recognised conversion like hymer or devon,but adrian flux has never asked me,just told them it was a campervan and got insurance.only downside is that motor homes dont qualify for no claims bonus(don't ask don't know why)Bonus is cheaper insurance and speed limit lifted to 70 if it will do that

Thanks for that. I rearly dont mind that its not a camper. If I had told FJ it was an LCV I would have had it on a multy policy with the other car. Still its insured now thats the main thing as an LCV as under EU regs it not a camper so I cant see im missleading anyone. After all you can stick a bed and cooker in anything. It is pritty though
Ill try for a multy policy next year.
I was hoping to hear from anyone else who might have or had one of these vans.

There was a red van with a custom 'box' type back on ebay last week (not a camper as such). I don't know if that was the one Irmscher was referring to? It was in Hartlepool. I did have the link but deleted it as it sold for the 'buy it now' price of £2,500 on either Friday or Saturday. Looked very nice and a good price. This is the second time it's been advertised by the same seller though - presumably the first sale fell through - so there's always a chance it might get relisted.
