Wheel bearing woes

Post by Dryad »

When I bought my current Minor a year ago it had a little play in the N/S front wheel bearing. Not too much to worry about, but you could hear it rattling when going over bumpy ground. A few months later I replaced both kingpins and all trunnions, and decided to replace the N/S wheel bearing at the same time. Still the same amount of play. Having looked around for an answer I was told it could be due to the hub being worn where the bearing fits in, due to it being driven around with an almost siezed bearing turning it's outer shell. So, just bought a good secondhand hub and another new bearing set. Guess what - still exactly the same. My thoughts now turn to the bearing spacer - I used the one which came with the replacement, but I did notice that one end looked highly polished. Could it be the problem? It would be a coincidence if both the old and replacement hubs had exactly the same amount of wear on the bearing spacer. I've spent £60 trying to solve this problem so far - It's driving me mad! :( Any ideas?

See the thread below!! Either do as Chris has done by fitting a shim - or take some metal off the spacer to get a nice snug fit with the bearings.

Hi Dryad,
i had the same problem. New bearings and play in the hub. You can add a shim between the outer shoulder an the bearing, look at my posting.

Thanks Chris and BM, thanks for the advice. Not sure which method to use; I don't think I have any bearing supplier in my area who could supply shims, and I don't have a lathe for taking a little off the spacer. I suppose I could buy a NOS hub and spacer from club spares, but that will probably be another £30 or so. I'll have to think this one through. The MOT is due next month, and I'm sure they would fail it on that.

The spacer may not be that hard - rub it with a file to see.

You may find that the shims from a minor gearbox are a similar diameter to the bearing. These shims are used in the front cover of the gearbox. (95p each) If you reduce the spacer instead, you need to keep it parallel---- not easy with a file!
Post the diameter of the bearing and I'll tell you if the shims I mention are the same.

Hello,
it is a standart size, same as the bearing. Outer bearing is 7303B and inner bearing is 7205B. So the outer diamter for the outer bearing is 47mm. You can try it in the www (in Germany we call them "Passscheiben" or "Distanzscheiben", http://www.agrolager.de/index.php?cPath ... =1a&page=2) or at local dealers. Some who repair gerboxes, engines or agricultural machines have them also. Buy some shims with 0,01mm and first use one. If the play ist away drive some miles because the bearings have to settle. Then proof again. Be aware to use to mutch shims. This will damage the bearings and the bearing will stop working. In worst case you can loose the Hub in the road.

Sounds scarey! :o I might see if I can get a NOS hub and spacer instead. That's a useful site, Chris, presumably they would be prepared to sell to anyone outside of Germany?
