Hello from Germany and question about hub assembly

Post by Monacochris »

Hello,
my name is Chris and i´m from Munich, Germany with my first Minor from 1967 - right hand drive. After some welding and mechanical work im on the street with german mot . I like driving with the minor.[frame]Image[/frame]

So i´ve a question about the front hub assembly and the spacer. In my front wheeel bearing i´ve some play. After changing the bearing the play is still in the bearing. I inspectet the hub and found out, that there is al little bit of metall missing.[frame]Image[/frame]. Is ist possible to use some shims or to shorten the spacer? After mesuring between the spacer and the assembly there is some difference, but how mutch must be the difference between the spacer (is 1.502in) and the assembly (is 1.486in).

Greetings
Chris

Welcome to the forum - lots of help here. The front hub looks a bit worn - there should be no play in the bearing when the nut is pulled up TIGHT. The internal spacer between the bearings is a loose spacer - are you looking at the shoulders where the bearings mount? The bearings must also be installed opposing each other - they are both thrust bearings (to an extent) and they must face each other so the thrust is being taken in both directions. Perhaps one bearing is in wrong way round?

Hello bmcecosse,
i put the bearings face to face together. I think it is the right direction. Could you explain me what meens a loose spacer? I think he spaces between the bearings that you can´t damage them if you pull the nut.

Today i´v been at the local bearing dealer and he sold me some shims. He looked on the hub and told me that the shoulder is a little bit worn and with spacers i can compensate the play between the bearings and the shoulder. These are standart with outer diameter 47mm, the inner diamter 37mm and 0,01mm thick. I put one between the outer bearing and the shoulder and - no play in the bearing, it is running easy and noisless. After rundtrip (15 miles) there is still no play and no noise in.[frame]Image[/frame]
Hope this was it.

Yes - that's the spacer - that should be fine, although you could probably just have taken some metal off the internal spacer to get the same result.

I think a shim is better than changing the size of the spacer. With the shims you can change the play step by step. If the spacer is to short, the bearing will damage after a few miles.
