Two general lubrication questions...

Post by Arthurdaily »

Hi, for you 'general' oil can for things like hinges, clutch rod, pedal hings, etc.. etc... what oil do you use?

Plus... When you refill radiator and cooling system, or simply top up, what recommended coolant do you use? Plus what 'sort' of water? Just tap?

Thank you! :D

3 in 1 or similar. Water up here is very soft - but if you have 'hard' water you should use bottled water - or pre-mixed anti-freeze.

I will - will perhaps buy mixed to ensure! What SORT of antifreeze, anything other than alcohol based I presume?

Oh God, I knew there was another fluid question... what brake fluid? And does it matter if I 'mix' brake fluids? As I don't want to drain what ever is in there when topping up... same with antifreeze, can I just top up what is already there?

The best antifreeze for a Minor is the genuine bluecol traditional a/f. It may require flushing every few years, but the modern long life preparations aren't really suited to our engines and hoses. I was sceptical of this until I tried a modern variety and found that I was losing water. Pressure testing the system (both hot and cold) could find no leak. Swapping radiator caps with another car, and anew cap, made no difference. No trace of a leaf, just water vanishing. Change back to Bluecol, and the car has been fine ever since.

would this work as well? It seems cheaper than bluecol?

Bully links never work - just use the pre-mixed antifreeze from Poundland - it's fine. And yes any DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid is fine.
