blinkin igniton light

Post by markthe45king »

Although madam is going to her second home at chertsey minors again this week (to get new cork gaskets for the petrol tank, and to try and prise open the jammed boot) i now have yet another question / issue (one day i will answer one rather than just ask).

i know it has been mentioned before, but mine is a little different - basically my ignition light is either staying on and flickering / going duller when revved or occassionally just glowering at me at low level (so you can barely tell in daylight) without the revs having any effect. There have been no electrical changes, the battery can only have changed polarity in an act of magic, and the fan belt looks pretty tight to me. Once or twice the yellow oil light has come on when turning the engine off too.

she is running a bit muddy at low revs and judders a bit, but i put that down to my dodgy clutch control. She seems happy on long runs and at higher speeds, and nothing seems too untoward otherwise - do we reckon electrical fault?

thanks as ever!

Glowing ignition light usually indicates that the dynamo is not charging. Check the brushes.
You can access the boot by folding the rear seat back forward then undoing the hinge bolts from the inside

Yes - I would also suspect brushes at end-of-life. I don't understand the oil light glowing when you switch off though......Unless - Is there any chance the oil and Ign lamps have been swapped over behind the speedo - so in fact what you have is a glimmering oil pressure light - indicating a badly worn engine - or a faulty oil pressure switch - or low oil level...... To test this idea - pull the wire off the oil pressure switch and turn the Ignition on - what colour lights do you now see?

BME - the ignition light has been functioning pretty much as normal, coming on when you would expect it to and normally going off once we are tootling happily along, it's literally been the last two trips it has come on, occassionally intermittently and on short journies pretty much the whole time.

i'm guessing the dynamo might affect her sluggishness and increased tendency to die at the start of trips too......so i shall get the brushes done. thanks.

Nothing to with the dynamo, poor engine tuning

I still think you should do test i suggested - to confirm if this is the oil light or the ignition light that you see glowing...
