Hi,
I am running a 1275 midget in std tune, 3 branch exhaust and hif carb. It has an oil cooler with no thermo stat.
My question is ! As the pipes fill up the engine bay and generally get in the way is there any point in keeping it ?
The last owner fiited it but I only use the car upto about 2000 miles a year. Any views?

I don't have any problems with overheating with the 1275 Midget engine in my Traveller, I did fit an extra fan blade as a precaution but the temp gauge reads around the 80 deg mark.

If you don't drive the car hard - remove it, overcooled oil is not a good idea. It may however be disguising a poor oil pressure problem.......

Water temperature in our 1380 has never been a problem, other than when I removed the by-pass hose, but that's another story!
I have the MG Metro water cooled oil cooler and an oil temperature gauge fitted. The the last 'upgrade' about 5 years ago was an increase in the CR to around 10.5:1 and the oil temperature increased from ~100°C to ~110°C for normal (enthusiastic!) road use. Water temperature hasn't changed at all, at around 75/80°C when moving, increasing to ~90°C in traffic (no mechanical fan), after which the electric fan kicks in and cycles it back to ~85°C.
On a track day the oil temperature increases to 130/135°C, which is just about OK for the full syntheic oil (Castrol 10W/60 Edge Sport) that I use, but I am going to fit a conventional oil cooler to get it down by at least 10°C to give a bit more margin. Water temperature stays exactly the same.
