checking engine is getting fuel?

Post by jmaster78 »

Hi all, whats the simplest way to check the fuel system on my minor. been sat up for a few years so replaced the points, condenser, rotor arm and cap, plugs and leads so car is now sparking but still won't go! how do i test the pump and if its working then how do i test the carb to see if its blocked? many thanks

pull the pipe off the carb and put the end into a containor switch on and see if the pump is pushing petrol through. if yes take top off carb, the three screws on top and look inside the bowl to see if there is petrol in the carb, if not tap the pump with a spanner or something and see if the pump then starts to tick and now have you petrol, also have you added new petrol ,it goes off after time and will not fire up. do the above and repost

Pour an egg cup of fuel down the carb and crank the engine. If it starts and runs for a few seconds then the ignition etc is ok. If it still doesn't start - check the ignition system thoroughly. SU carbs rarely give any problems - but do make sure the dashpot can rise easily - and falls back down to the bridge with a nice clunk.
