Anyone know the size of the nut on the top link of the front suspension - the one that holds the trunion on?
I stripped the thread when replacing the bushes (I suspect it was already half gone) and BM and ESM don't have any in stock. My car's unusable until I can get one!

the castlated nut that goes onto the damper arm. or the normal nut (held with a lock washer) on the back edge of the trunnion?
i have a feeling they are both the same thread as the nuts that hold the bumpers onto the bumper irons. if you have one of those nuts lying around, or you could even pinch a nut off a bumper for the meanwhile!

It's the plain nut on the back edge of the trunnion. They may be the same as a castlelated one was fitted there, or they're different which is why it stripped!
Sadly I don't have any bumper nuts spare - I guess I could take one of the rear bumpers (Traveller) off to get it to the MOT on Friday though, worth a try, thanks. Not sure having two big studs poking out the front instead of a bumper would please the MOT man. Otherwise I might have to just order a selection of BSW/BSF/UNF nuts from a fastener company and see what fits.

Why don't you give one of the numerous traders advertising in the magazine a call- this is something most are bound to have. You're not limited to just ESM and BM!

The thread on the pin seems to be OK, but I've got a spare pin anyway.
Just spoken the MMC Birmingham and although they don't list it separately on their website they have them in stock. I'll be adding them to my list of favourite suppliers.

Well, for future reference it's not the same as the bumper nuts - they're BSW by the looks of it which is a coarser thread.
If I do need to change the pivot pin does anyone have any tips on how to get it off the damper? I foresee much use of hammers and bad language...

when on a minor trip a few years ago, my friends traveller shed its nut and washers and a bush
on the bumpy irish roads. that was temorarily repaired by pinching a nut off his rear bumper. perhaps the threads changed at some point... or repro pins use different threads to originals?
i had much fun trying to get my pins out of my damper. even with the dampers removed!
much hammering and swearing is the best solution!
the trouble is that, even to push it out in a vice is tricky, as there is nothing flat on the damper to push against. we discovered that the flat disc that is half way down the pivot pin is just pressed on, and can get drifted off with the pin in situ. this then allows you to slide a deep socket down the pin so that the shoulder of the socket can push against the damper arm. then you can use a vice to push on the other end of the pin (with a nut fitted to protect the thread if you want) and bob's your mothers brother.
not sure how that can be translated to doing it on the car though. supposedly giving the pin a good tap all the way around should be enough to free the taper.

I can confirm that the correct size nut is 1/2 BSF which is the same as the bumper nuts (unless non original different threaded parts have been used as replacements)

It seems that replacement pins use a finer thread now.
