Flashing indicators not working

Post by Vernon »

All flashing indicators have stopped working on my 1965 2-door saloon. All other items from the A3-A4 fuse are working, e.g. brake lights, wipers, fuel gauge. There is power at the dark green wire going into the flasher unit on the bulkhead when the ignition is on and the indicator arm is operated. When the flasher unit is bypassed by joining the dark green wire and the green/brown together the lights still do not light up. All bulbs look OK. What else can I check or is the fault buried in the wiring loom? All help appreciated, Colin

When you bypassed the flasher unit did you have the indicator switch turned left or right and was the ignition on?
If you did then the fault has to be between the flasher unit and the switch. If the fault was past the switch then one side would work and not the other (assuming you haven't got the same fault on the left side wiring as you have on the right side! )

The green wire to the B (X) terminal of the flasher unit should be live with the ign. on and the ind. switch on or off. The ind. switch then completes the circuit to the left or right indicators from term. L. If you connect term. B and L then the ind. lights should work but not flash on whichever side the ind. switch is set.

Sounds like something has failed on the input side of the indicator switch.

Thanks for the replies. The problem is sorted now but I don't know how! I removed the steering wheel and indicator switch cover and tested the green/brown terminal for power and it was live. I then operated the switch and the flashers work! I replaced the cover and steering wheel and everything is working again!
Thanks again, Colin
