starter teeth

Post by les »

Hi, what's known about starter motor teeth? I have a couple of motors but the teeth are a different form on each. One has a flat on the peaks the other more pointed, I don't think this is due to wear.

Do they both have the same number of teeth?

Is there a date stamped on the starter bodies and are they both 12 volt?
Some Morris side valve engines have 80T ring gear such as the WD generator engine and presumably Morris 8 engines (6V?). The Series MM has 102T ring gear. The starter bolt spacing is 5 in on all the starters?

Mike, thanks for replies. Both motors are dated 73, both are 12v and 5'' centres. One has 10 teeth the other 9.

There are 9, 10 and 11 tooth versions. The 9 is probably the most desirable for a large capacity engine.

The teeth pitch must be the same. You cannot use a standard starter on an MM flywheel with 80T ring gear, only 102T.
