not starting, help please

Post by sevrien »

Hello,

A few weeks ago, I was driving around when my engine just stopped and wouldn't start again.
After towing my car back home, I started to look for the problem.
A few possibilities were there:

Blocked fuel filter - I replaced it with a new one
Blocked carburator - I cleaned it, replaced every washer, gasket and the jet
Broken ignition coil - replaced it
Bad contact points - replaced it
bad condenser - replaced it
bad leads - checked them all, all is OK

Anyone who can help me? I'm out of options.

Greetings
Sevrien

What happened when the engine stopped? Did it stop immediately or make any noises or jerking motion? Have you done a compression check?

compression is ok on 3 cylinders, the 4th loses a bit
when it stalled, it just stopped like turning off the key, no stuttering, jerking or what so ever

From the symptons it would appear to be electrical. Some ideas for you.
Low tension wires attached to the coil....have they fallen off , become detached ?
are they sound, ekectrically / no breakes ?
Rotor arm ...does this look OK.
Distributer cap ..is this in good condition, the carbon brush /pin still there in the centre and the little spring
operating.
King lead...the main high tension lead from the coil to the distributer firmly pushed in and clean conections.
Battery connection, earth, leads from battery to solenoid, etc.
Ignition switch connection..no work been done under the dash recently ?

If you have a multi meter checking the absence of a "spark" methodically is the way to go.

We seem to have two identical threads running so I'll lock this one to avoid confusion, as the other thread (in mechanical) has had more responses: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=38798
