Problems with new traveller wood

Post by fillpoke »

Where to start......! I just unpacked my new wood today freshly delivered from [edited out - Matt] and I've got to say I'm really disappointed. First thing I noticed even before the cardboard was all removed was a split in the wood of the offside b post. Then I saw there was a smaller one in the same position on the nearside. Not good. I carefully offered up the sides to the car and when screwed to the b posts the bottoms of the c posts are about an inch and a half too high. The old wood which came off was fitted again and this goes on perfectly. So what to do now? Has anybody any ideas?
Thanks for any help,

Well the first thing to do would be to take it up with the company involved...

i would not have even trial fitted it, as matt suggests get back in touch with the supplier, and do not be afraid to use the sale of goods act.. not fit for the purpose etc etc. the wood is structural and this part looks badly weakened and is therefore not fit

There are a few suppliers of wooden parts. Steve Foreman (Woodies) sells direct and via some traders. The product is first class and used by professional restorers in whom I have every confidence. There are other wood suppliers that I have seen at shows whose product also looks good. There are also some traders who offer a product that is cheaper. There's a reason for that. I bought a set of cheaper rear doors and have never seen such poor work before. They went straight back to the trader concerned as completely unacceptable. I bought the more expensive doors and they have been perfect. There's a moral in there somehwere.

You need to contact your supplier and reject the goods, then order some decent stuff. Sorry.

Obviously everything on here is pure speculation, but could they have been damaged in transit?

That split certainly couldn't have been done in transit. It looks like the wood split under tension. It's not finished very well either. Ring the firm and complain and insist on a replacement immediately.

You can 'name and shame' in other forums. Certainly return these for a full refund - and buy from a reputable source.......

I've been in touch with the supplier by telephone and to be fair he was very helpful. He said that the splits were not evident when he sent the sides off to me. He has arranged to have them collected on Monday for return to him and he will send me another set which he assures me will be perfect.

Hopefully they will also be the correct fit ? But I would have little faith in replacements from that supplier not developing splits too.......

Some couriers are pretty useless, I've heard it said of some that they could lose an elephant and break an anvil.

"Once you break something you will see how it was put together"
