1963 rose taupe traveller resto.

This is the traveller I picked up from Essex a couple of weeks ago. Nothings changed since I dropped it on the drive. It has collected more dust but thats about it at this stage. When I get a chance, i'll strip the back out which is where the worst of the rust etc seems to be. Cant wait.[frame][/frame]

It seems very original. Apart from the front seats that have been recovered in the later 60's vinyl. Should be 2 tone red/grey. The front wings appear to be plastic and the n/s wing mirror is a bit wild for a moggie. Looks like it should be on Ford or something, possibly a zephr or Capri. The wood has had some repairs at various joints over the years. They've been done pretty nicely for DIY jobs. The underside situation is normal, cross member is held up by magic, the rear spring hangers are still in Essex somewhere, the inner rear wings are double skinned, looks like a new wing was just welded in over the old rotten one. The headlinging has a tear at the rear.

On the up side, all the seals are like new so no leaks! Its very complete as well, some parts in better nick than others. Still has a very original looking 1000 engine and smooth gearbox. I've got a decent 1098 ribbed box in the shed so that'll probably go in one day. I'm going to do all the welding myself. Been looking on ESM and adding up the costs. Might just kidnap 'Taupe' to do the work or swap our projects round and see if he notices. They are the same colour after all.

Indeed. Although I dont think my skills could match yours from what i've seen on your resto thread. I just contacted traveller timbers asking them if they'd be willing to let me use some drawings to make my own timber sections but obviously they couldnt lend them to me! Still, you dont ask....

I could use existing timber as a pattern to make my own but the timber on mine has had patches put in on the joints so the original size and construction of the timber would be difficult to work out.

Not sure which part of Surrey you're in but if you're not too far from Redhill/Reigate I have a complete side in my garden which was replaced on my 1959 Traveller last year. Whilst rotting in many places all the pieces are there and haven't been altered at all so would be OK for measuring from. The bottom rail is there, just a bit hidden by soil.

As you can see from the photo the old timber has embarked on a new career supporting beans and peas, so if you do want to use this for measurements, don't leave it too long or the plants will have grown too much.

First of all. Thats the greatest use of car parts i've ever seen. And That timber looks better than some of the stuff on cars for sale i've seen! I live in Epsom most of the time but the car is in Redhill! I'll be there next week, maybe I could come round to measure the timber. Thanks very much for the offer.

Like the project, I also have a 1963 rose taupe car but sadly its only a saloon not a traveller.

Sadly I dont think i'm ever going to have time for this project so after a few weeks of thought, i'm going to see if I can sell my traveller as is or do a straight swap for a running saloon. I've recently started working for myself as a carpenter and have been working either 6 or 7 day weeks. I'd hate to be one of these people who strips a car down with best intentions and then watch it rot away over the next couple of years when I dont have time to do the work. I'd rather it go to someone who can do the work, and has storage before I strip it down and make it harder for someone!

As I said, if someone has a saloon, preferbly 4 door that they'd like to swap for this project, let me know. Any condition as long as its on the road. Ironically, i'll be looking for the same sort of thing as the moggie I sold in Feburary!

I'll go back to looking at Taupes thread now. Nice to see someone doing it right.
