Fuel pump

Can anyone link me to how to fit a fuel pump as i just got a re con one but not really sure where to start thanks.

The best place to start is where I did when I got my first Minor (and any subsequent car as well).

Buy a workshop manual. The old Haynes manual (blue cover) for the Minor is very good and much better than for recent cars, as much more DIY can be done on the Minor than is possible on a Modern car.

The National club also sells an excellent workshop manual /CD written by Rob Thomasson and copies of the original BMC dealers workshop ring binder manual comes up on ebay.

As for a quick guide to fuel pump replacement:-

1) Disconnect the battery (earth terminal)
2) Undo the metal (from tank) fuel pipe union (use Whitworth open ended spanner or an adjustable spanner) and disconnect pipe.
3) unscrew the (flexible) fuel pipe clamp and withdraw pipe- be careful of any petrol spills!
4) Undo the electrical connections from the fuel pump- an earth may be screwed to the fuel pump body (black wire) and the power supply to the fuel pump is under the black cap at the right of the pump, held on with a black plastic screw, and underneath with a brass nut and washer.
5) Undo the two mounting bolts that hold fuel pump to bulkhead (3/16 whitworth spanner- or use adjustable spanner).

The fuel pump may now be replaced with the recon item. Assembly is the reverse of strip down.

You don't have to 'buy' a Workshop Manual........... Google is your friend! I wasn't aware anyone was selling 'recon' fuel pumps - hope it's not an electronic one ? Was the old pump giving problems? Good idea to carry a spare anyway - clean the points, or fit new, and then test it on the car.

tbh i was given this Morris and it hasnt moved since 1983 it has no pump on it however the previous owner gave me one that he said had come off the car and be recondition but never went back on so i was kind of just hoping to put it back together and see what happens.

Unless you are a very good mechanic, it is a good idea to get a manual. It will show the proper way to carry out repairs and servicing. Google is a friend of no-one!

I do plan on buying one just wanted to get it out of the way this afternoon that was all i will follow your step by step routine tho so thanks for your help.

Before you connect it up and find that it does not work, connect it to a battery charger and check that it ticks, one lead to the pump body and one lead to the screw terminal on the end of the pump. As it has not been used for so long you may have to remove the plastic cap and give the contacts a flick to start them off
