choke handle came off in my hand!
today i fettled the choke a bit and it came off in my hand! looked in the engine bay, the cable looks old, a bit of tape near the actual linkage near the carb. i tried to push the cable back through the hole but it didn't appear. are they easy to fit and do you have to trim them or is it a fit and forget item? many thanks.
Re: choke handle came off in my hand!
Once fitted you will be able to judge if it needs trimming by the amount of extra cable that comes out of the end.

I think he is going to---just think he wants to know if it will be too long---

The new cable comes as a complete assembly. You will need to remove the glove box in order to gain access to the securing nut behind the dashboard. Undo the nut, remove old cable. Push new cable through hole in dashboard, feed spring washer and nut over cable end, then thread cable through hole in bulkhead through to engine bay. Secure the new cable to the dashboard with the nut etc. Ensure that knob is pushed fully in and the thread the end of the cable through the mounting bracket and secure to operating link on carb with the linkage in the NON choked position. Check that all works OK, adjusting as necessary. When happy, refit glove box and trim end of cable if required.
You can lightly oil the cable by applying a few drops at each end; but if it's too loose then you'll end up needing the old clothes peg to hold it out.
Tip: If you are going to cut the inner cable, then tin it with solder first. This ensures that when you cut it (good sharp side cutters are best) the individual strands will not unravel.

I thought the choke cable was made from a single wire, so as it can be 'pushed' as well as 'pulled',not stranded?

What stops the choke cable releasing?, the solid ones have a 'kink' in the cable
Re: choke handle came off in my hand!
Only if they've been bent! There should be a nipple with a screw clamp to hold the cable.
