She passed the MOT

Post by RogerRust »

My MG sailed through it's MOT test so to celebrate Bev came out with me for a 'drive it day' trip to Coton Manor in Northants - probably the best English country garden.

I can't remember the last time she came out in any of my classics - really not her thing.

Well done for you and the car, it is always a great relief and satisfaction when one's classic car passes the MOT again. So many garages seem to be overly harsh on classics these days.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Roger were they lenient on the omissions test as my local garage is a stickler for being spot on and i wont be going back to him

They shouldn't be putting a pre 72 car through an emissions test!?? :o

The exhaust check is "visual" only, i.e. no excessive smoke and the car should pass.

The place where I take my classic cars for MOT the MOT tester did an emission test on the MG Midget I own and the 1968 A35 van I used to own by accident and the van had done over 360000 miles on the same engine it.He could'nt beleive the emissions were so low and it would have passed anyway and it was better than a lot of modern cars.

360,000 miles - that may be a record for an A series! :D

An A series engine will go forever if you service it regularly and don't thrash it. These cars were from an era when Britain made quality cars. Not so 70's Leyland cars.

The emissions do not surprise me, I have heard this before. Modern cars take 5-10 miles before the cat is warm and starts working, and modern engines run slightly rich to keep the cat happy- so actually HIGH emissions for the first 5-10 miles, and of course, most journeys are below 5 miles in length........and diesel cars are much dirtier- probably why we have smog problems recently with the amount of diesel engined cars on our roads now.

My MOT guy won't do an emmisions test as the computer tells him the car doesn't need it.
I'd be interested to see the numbers, but surprised any MOT tester would do the test under these circumstances.
