Oil On Steering Gaitor

I investiated some new drips of oil that appeared on the driveway and found it coming from around the gaitor that covers the near side track rod.
This is a 1969 2 door saloon
Is it as simple as a split gaitor or does it indicate something more serious with the steering rack?

Splits are usually quite easy to see, I'm wondering if it's been over filled, then oil might be coming from the breather which is just above where the column goes in.

A good reason to use grease in the rack - rather than runny oil.

Nasty runny oil, gets everywhere, lubricating everything.

Until it 'pools' in the gaiters - and drips out......

Only if there is a hole in the gaiter, and you don't use the car.

Minor racks don't exactly have a reputation for being short lived.
