Passenger external door locks. When?

Post by RobThomas »

Like it says... when did they first add door locks to the outside of 2-door cars on the left hand door? My MMs don't have them but I've seen a later car with one. Interchangeable?

Rob

At approx car number 1039597 I think thats probably around 1964

Im guessing they are interchangeable but you would need to punch a hole in the door.

i thought it was only travellers that had passenger external door locks. but i may be wrong. the only 2 doors i've seen with locking passenger doors have had their passenger doors donated by a traveller!

My Traveller has a passenger external lock -( '62) but then a lot of cars have had their doors changed for better ones so that doesn't really help does it?

I would say probably in the last body up date when the newer type of dash was fitted, as Taupe says about 1964.

A lock on the left door was certainly not specially fitted on LHD cars, drivers had to unlock the RH passenger door, lean across and unlock the LH driver's door and walk around the car to get in. And they still managed to export the cars, or didn't anybody bother to lock their cars?

Neither, Mike -- at least not for me -- my passenger door lock doesn't work!

I wonder if we could get the good Mr Declan Burns or a similar engineery-mind to see about making some new handles that lock from the inside AND the out? It'd be a heck of a job but they'd sell like hotcakes...

Nice compliment,
Anybody got a close up photo of the handle in question as it must be different. Mine is 64 and has a door lock.

The danger of being able to lock the doors from inside and out is leaving the key in the ignition and locking yourself out.
You can tell if the doors have been swapped, they would have different keys, unless both have been swapped then the ignition key would be different.

I have to admit that I very seldom use the passenger door lock on the Traveller, I have got so used to leaning across in the MM that I do the same in the Traveller

I stand to be corrected but I think the passenger door lock was a option available to De Luxe Travellers.

i think you could be right - there's a traveler (1961 i think, but could be '62) deluxe edition which was parked outside my neighbors' house this morning - i had a look, and it has a passenger side door lock :)

Well, then, with a Morris Minor you can just climb in through the boot!  This is a common problem on most cars, though, isn't it? The conscientious modern car owner is eternally afraid of locking himself out of his car at JUST the wrong moment...

Give me the weekend and you'll have your photo! In fact I'll take several...
