The 'zetec' project

Post by Alex'n'Ane »

I bought the car around the start of may last year, this is how it looked when i acquired it.

As you can see someone else had made a start, some time ago though. She had a 1500 triumph engine and gearbox fitted, which i briefly had running before selling it on to go in another friends minor. Marina disc breaks fitted to the front and a dolomite rear axle. Since then i have basically completely stripped her, inc all interior, to see how solid she was. Have been pleasantly surprised, new sills needed as always, but solid floors, and only a small patch or two on the inner wings. (i hope) (sorry no pics as there all on my pc at home)
The plan for her has evolved over time, originally i was going to keep the engine and running gear, however i have since decided to go for more power and more mod cons, and hopefully will end up with a car that can be used everyday and is as reliable and fast as most modern cars out there. Timescale for this is a realistic 3 years, for when i have finished uni.
The basic plan is for a 2.0 zetec conversion, subtly modded body work, eg jlh fibreglass wide rear wings and front wing extensions, and a pretty much custom interior, with larger leather front seats, extra dials, radio etc.
So far i have bought the engine (a phase 3) Image a type 9 v6 gearbox, and have a lovely genuine low milage escort rear axle from my mates written off mk2 escort. Not certain on what suspension yet, will be budget dependant, seeing what bargains are available, but hopefully jlh Same with the disc brakes. Still contemplating and researching the fuelling options, injection or bike carbs. And engine management. And need to decide/ get water rail, and the other small bits needed to mate the gearbox to engine such as flywheel clutch and the required spigot bearing etc..
I think this is pretty much where it all stands atm. I am slowly getting the parts together for this, looking for the good deals when they're around, so if anyone has any of the parts i may need i would be very grateful if they'd let me know
Sorry about the lack of pics will post more up when more gets done! or i make my mind up on a few bits

Unfortunately the project has taken somewhat a back seat since i've got this 1.4 engine, which is going to go in the everyday minor. However before this she needs new rear springs and is getting marina discs fitted, and whole new breaking system and mot'd. Hopefully all that will be done in June, ready for the national rally, but not sure if i will get the engine in in time, or if she will be coming to the national with the standard engine still.
