Tyres and wheels

Post by markthe45king »

Any thoughts on this?

I admit i may have caught a kerb on sunday and knocked a tyre off the rim. Replaced that with the spare. Drove about a mile before the spare went flat. Took the two flats to national tyre centre and got them sorted.

The man said the wheels were getting a bit rusty, but were ok. They re-rimmed the original tyre and said both were fine. Drove half a mile home on the original tyre (which is six months old). This was on thursday. Went back to her tonight, and lo, the same tyre is flat again.

so is it just a puncture they somehow missed? Or any other ideas?

If you hit a kerb hard enough to knock the tyre off the rim - I guessing the tyre carcase is damaged..... I suppose it's also possible that the bang has damaged the wheel/loosened the rivets... Blow it back up and then stand it up in water to see where the air is leaking out. Check the sidewalls closely for bruising or bulging.

If you kerbed the tyre that hard then then I would think seriously about scrapping the tyre. There is likely to be damage to the sidewall which could fail at speed.

Can I assume you are running tubeless tyres? If the wheels are rusty then you may not be getting a good seal round the rim, as BMC says, put it in water, kids paddling pools are good for this.

all good and understandable answers for the tyre i kerbed, but i have no idea why the spare would do exactly the same. Should i just order two new wheels?

my spare was brand new 3 yrs ago. but it kept going down, the water trick showed up a leaky valve, which was replaced and things have been good ever since.

If it's just the rust that's bothering you - rub it away and and paint the wheel rims!

thank you all as ever for everything - done a few hundred miles and all is holding up - just a bit of shoddy workmanship i guess....

also a big thank you to chertsey minors who lent me a spare spare wheel in case mine did go again (and finally showed me how to use the original jack!!)

NEVER use the original jack - carry a bottle jack or a trolley jack and use that under the suspension. The original jack is for show ONLY !
