which speedo?

Post by scott75 »

Hi Guys i have a 1961 4 door which has a black face dogey speedo
it has the screw down wedge type fixings but the car has the mounts to take a speedo with the retaining screws.
Should my car have a black or silver face?
The other thing is the car was a 948cc to begin with but now has a 1098 and box in because i don't have an original speedo i have no reference point to start off with so what do you think? i would be glad of any help cheers Scott :-?

i think late '63 early '64 the minor go the silver dash and black speedo.

My old '63 1000 had a gold speedo in the center.

Never seen a minor with a silver speedo, only magnilia/goldish or black

the silver speedo is actually a mk1 mini unit. I had one fitted in my ute when I bought it. They actually look quite good, but the original should be the goldy faced one

speedo

If you have a 1098 engine with a matching(ribbed) gearbox and
the correct (4.22-1) differential then you should have the 1098
speedo, and the matching tank sender unit for the fuel gauge.
The first two years of the 1098 speedo they were gold faced,
thereafter they are black faced. Silver? not a Minor speedo.
The code numbers (on the face of the speedo) for the 1098's
are: For the gold faces..SN4477/80 and for the black faces
SN4419/04, SN4423/06, or SN4419/12.

Hi Guys can you help me out i have a 1961 4 door which currently has a balck faced jaegger speedo. It has the screw down wedge fittings but the car has the mounts for the retaining screw type speedo
This is Scott75's other post - I'm fairly certain no Minor ever left the factory with a Jaeger speedo, so it's clearly wrong. As Willie says, the 1098cc Smiths speedo should be used if the car has the later ribbed gearbox.

Yes, the SN4477/00 is for a 948 model with a 4.555-1 diff unit.
