How do you replace gaiter on steering rack

Post by learyd »

I'm restoring a 1959 4 door and both the rubber gaiters are split. My steering rack is off the car at the moment and I'm having difficulty trying to remove the tierods to be able to put the gaiters on. So not really sure who to replace these have you got any methods of removing stubborn tierods? I've already heated it and soaked them in wd40 with no avail. When I bought the rubber gaiters morris minor bham suggested a recondition rack and tie rods and thoughts guys???

You can buy gaiters with a cone fitting that you can stretch over the TRE

You don't remove the tierods (which are more usually known as trackrods) - just take the track rod ends off the track rods...... Loosen the lock nuts first - soak them overnight in Plus Gas - after vigorously wire-brushing the threads. Support the nut below on a lump of steel - then strike the nut HARD with a lump hammer to jar the threads free. Heat WILL work - but you may need cherry red.

The ones that stretch over the end of the TRE, that Taupe mentioned, work fine. I've used them on mine with success.
