Will this roof rack fit?

Post by stephenpolhill »

Hellloo.
I am desperately looking for a roof rack of some sort, I have found a few at big prices and some that are snapped up quick!
Just a query, would these modern style ones fit (see below)?
The trouble is the saloons have a domed roof so is harder to measure. Please advise of any that would fit, Many thanks,
Stephen

well most modern cars have a small curve or flat roof, the moggie is quite a curve so may not fit

Lay a straight bar across the roof and measure the vertical distance from the bar to the gutters. This will give you the minimum length of the clamps needed to fit the roof rack. The method by which the clamps fit the gutters is also of concern.
I much prefer to tow a trailer

The traditional roof racks that were fitted to cars such as Minors back in the day , carried the weight on rubber pads that sat on the roof - the gutters were only used to secure the rack - not to carry the weight ! And believe me - they tended to come loose all too easily as I discovered when carrying oxygen and acetylene cylinders (and spare wheels) on a rack when Servicing on the Circuit of Ireland Rally many moons ago!! The bars you show will impose all the carried weight on the gutters - and you should realise they are just 'gutters' - fixed to the roof with spot welds. They do not represent panel joints as such and so they are not intended or designed to carry any great weight. I guess they will be ok if you are just carrying something bulky but not heavy - but as suggested already - a trailer may be the best way forward unless you find a classic rack with the pads.....

I used bars almost identical to these on my moggie. They just clear the roof so any weight on them and they will touch the roof. If your worried about your roof paint, put rubber, foam or something similar around the bars. This will support the middle and protect the car.
