Anyone Hazzard A Guess ?

Post by Pasty »

Hello there .

I appreciate this is a bit rude (My 1st post , and it's a "What's it worth" question), but I think I need some expert advice on this one.

My Mum is thinking of selling her beloved '55 Moggie, and it's definitely a bit special. She's the second owner (her Grandmother was the first) , and it's clocked up a total of 18 thousand miles from new (seriously ! :D ) .

It's completely original & in full working order (had a full rebuild ~1980ish , and some corrosion repairs to the doors etc about a year ago). It's MOT'd & runs just like the day it was new !.

The thing is , she wants to know what she should expect to get for it, and in all honesty I haven't got the foggiest how you'd put a price on 'Granny', (as she's affectionately known)

These pic's may help -

Now, I appreciate it's a bit 'how long is a piece of string ?' , but does anyone want to make an educated guess ? - What do you think I should tell her to ask for it ?

Cheers,

Pasty

Hi, welcome to this site. Does "Granny" have a current MOT as this will affect the value. A car with a current MOt will attract a lot more interest and money.

Yes (despite the silly mileage, she does get a trip out once a week to blow the cobwebs out !)

It's a little hard to value a car really without seeing it close up. How long has the MOT to run? Please don't be insulted but for instance what state is the paint in. Any little "bubbles" in it/ surface rust on wings/ rust around the headlights, She looks great in your pictures but they are quite small so it's hard to tell. How clean is the engine bay/boot area - any signs of rust etc? Also what state is the interior in - any rips to upholstery/door cards. What is your location. We have branches all over the country and many have someone who you could contact who may be able to give you a good idea of what to ask for her.

Sorry - just realized those pic's are miniscule ! (I'll have a go at rectifying that)

The paintwork was all done with the corrosion work last year - It's literally flawless !

(& she's near Falmouth in Cornwall BTW )

Well I think she looks stunning and if I owned her she'd be going nowhere (back into the garage)! :D

Try contacting the Cornish Club http://www.cornwallmorrisminorclub.co.uk They may be able to offer advice locally - someone really needs to see the car close up to properly value it.

Thanks for that ASL - I knew this'd be the right place to get some guidance.

Very difficult to value, but if you are looking for a ball park figure I would say around £3k assuming it's as good as it appears and all solid underneath with no plate repairs.

The problem is that as soon as you get close to the £3k mark the number of people interested declines dramatically. The fact that it is an original 803cc makes it very rare, but also less desirable due to it's lack of performance. (I know, I have one almost exactly the same)

By the way it's not a 1953, it's a mid 1955 to September 1956 build from the pictures.

I'd agree with that, around £2750 due to the condition and originality. I'd put it up for £3000 if it was me!

Many morris enthusiasts want originality, but it's not often you find an unmolested car. Try starting at £3,250.00 You can always "haggle"! :D

Oh - It's original alright !! - There's a little 'petrol book' in there that she fills in with dates/amounts/prices every time she puts fuel in it -- I think it goes back pre-decimalisation !!

If you really want to sell post all the pictures in the For Sale section of this site with a contact 'phone number and an idea of what price you want. I personally don't think you'll have too much trouble finding her a caring new home. It wouldn't take too much work to put this car into Concours because of it's originality.

Thanks for that. - I'll go back to her with the guesstimate "Somewhere North of £3K" , see if that tallies with what she was expecting, & go from there .

For a genuine unmolested low mileage Minor like that - i would think it's worth putting it up in a classic car auction. Of course - there will be fees to pay, and you need to balance that against possible higher price achieved. But - if you are happy with say £3000 and want the car to go a true enthusiast who will love/cherish/keep original - then this the place to sell it! Just take the first £3k pressed into your hand. Don't accept any offers from overseas that want to give you £9000 and then you refund them £6000 cash when they pick up the car...........

Dang! The jig is up, boys!

I'd say it's worth $5000 at least. Which these days is about equal to what you've all been saying. It sure is beautiful...I'd LOVE to have it, but have neither the money nor the capacity to pick it up.

Values on ebay seem to be at a low at the moment. Not that I spend too much time on ebay and have an encyclopedic knowledge of classic car values......

Are you trying to say the offer of a £1Million bank transfer from my 'loyal friend Prince Saheed of Nigeria' isn't genuine ?
