timing gun

Post by dalebrignall »

having serviced myrtle a few weeks ago,the car still over runs when i switch off. i cheacked the timing and it was far to advanced, the reason for this was i was putting the induction pick up on number 1 the wrong way round.today i noticed a arrow that points to the spark plug so the reading was prevoiusally way off.i have now backed it off back to 3btdc,it will get a good test run in a weeks time 220 miles up to filey yorks, going on holiday again . we live and learn every day . :D :D

Not sure about any of that, as long as the pick up is one number one (nearest the rad) then it should be fine.
What arrow that points to the spark plug?

you can put the pick up on 2 ways the arrow points to the spark plug ie have the arrow pointing to the plug not pointing to the dizzy end of the number 1 lead if you see what i mean .

Ho ho .....can't see that making any difference..... If it wasn't pinking - it wasn't too far advanced. In fact 'running on' often means too retarded. Are you sure the vacuum advance is working? Timing gun is big waste of time.......

I kind of understand, my gun is different and can only go one way, however I doubt that it would make any difference as there is only one pickup wire.

A timing light will get you in the right ball park, and show if the advance mechanism is working when you get the engine revved up.

To get the absolute best from the engine needs road tests and tweaking based on them.

What colour are the spark plugs? White means a too weak mixture which will also lead to running on.
