As someone said earlier, go for a Peugeot - my second car (the first is the Morris 1000 Traveller) is a 307HDI estate, consumes 5.6 litres per 100km (I'll leave you to translate that in miles to a gallon). Best Peugeot I had was a 305 GDR estate and did 360000km from new in 1989 to 2005 when it was scrapped due to a bump in the back. The diesel engine and other parts are no doubt in other Peugeots somewhere in France (or Africa). 605VM35 was a superb work horse earlier models are now becoming collectors car over here.
Michael.

Re: Astra 1.3 CDTi
This calculator suggests 50 mpg.
http://mpg.webix.co.uk/
Still not brilliant but better than 42 mpg which I manage with a 2.2 litre diesel Mercedes.
No way would I put veg oil in it, and I'd take some convincing even to use bio diesel.
The previous one also diesel but not common rail was very happy with a mixture of veg oil and diesel.
VWs I had before, a Passat and a Golf ran very nicely on a high percentage of veg oil.

Watch out Roy as peugeots and others have a device that when you open the fuel cap it injects something ??
and helps achieve good mpg .Iwill ask my son in the morning what it is but might scupper the cooking oil venture

Re: Astra 1.3 CDTi
130kph max, unless otherwise indicated on motorways, generally a tollroad (a rip-off) in France, - 110kph on dual carriageways, unless otherwise indicated and generally tollfree. We don't have toll roads in Brittany - Be careful in town areas there are now 30kph zones (20mph), I got done last year in one at 46kph (with the Morris !!!).-Glad you liked the Poisson d'Avril but I do have a heavy foot on the pedal............bmcecosse wrote:I thought the speed limit was now 110 KPH??
