Hello Chris,

yes, the metal doesn't need to be the same thickness, just favour the thicker metal when you are doing the welding. You'll need to get enough current for this, i.e more than if you were just welding the 1\16" part. If you can find some scrap to practice on this will make it far easier.

You certainly won't be able to do it with 'arc' welding....... MIG should be possible if sufficiently skilled (ie not like me!) and it will be easy with oxy/acet where the flame can be easily moved from thick to thin in a weaving pattern to get the molten metal flowing nicely!
