Just fitted a 1275 midgit gearbox to my marina engine and found first gear noisy and wounderd if thicker oil or an additve would quieten it down for now. I do not want to chnage it until the end of summer.
Thanks

Re: gearbox noise
1st gear sound like a bag of nails on most Minor boxes including my MG 1275 box, treat it gently and it may last for years or until you can't stand the noise!

Re: gearbox noise
not sure if you mean 'noisier than a normal car' or 'noisier than a normal minor'. 1st gear is straight cut so will always whine (the same sound most modern cars make while reversing). be sure not to go into first whilst the car is moving, it's a sure-fire way to loose teeth!
Re: gearbox noise
It's ok to bang it in to 1st if you double-de-clutch .......... How else to cope with uphill hairpins at speed???

Re: gearbox noise
Try getting a Series MM up a 1 in 5 without double de clutching into 1st
