The tyres on my 1970 4 door are 155/14 but they seem too wide for the rims and bulge over each side. The steering also seems a bit heavier than what i think it should be, is it because they are a cheap make ( the rears are remoulds) as it seems a popular size avaialble from suppliers. I am thinking of getting some 145's and wonder what others think.

I find that 155/14 toyo tyres @ 30 psi are fine, I do not notice that they are particularly heavy.

For a standard Minor, I'd go 145 x 14 every time. Lose the remoulds, even though they won't affect the steering if they.re on the rear.

Try your tyres at 30/32 psi .

Agree, up the pressure a bit- and go for a narrower tyre. The best my Traveller has ever steered was on 135 section tyres. These are radials that are closest to the size of the original crossplys and a Minor steers and handles very nicely on 135s.

Next best is 145 tyres. I just don't understand why many people think that wider wheels/ tyres are better.

Another thought, grease the trunnions and oil the rack!

Good 145's would get my vote everytime. I hate the wobbly feeling that 155s give on hard cornering, caused by tyre roll.
A decent 155 will probably give better handling than a poor 145, and many will use 155's due to slightly better availability but if you order them from a few of the Minor specialists, both sizes are available.

The other option is to get the LP917 rims from the 8CWT commercials - these are just perfect width to take 155 tyres.

I'm for 155s on my Series MM. 135s may be the same width as 5.20 crossplys but 155s are the nearest circumference. The handbook quotes 22psi for tyre pressures but that is for crossplys, radials need to be around 30psi except if you are running 175s on 13 x 5.5 rims
