Morris Oxfords
I've been looking at Oxfords for a while and was wondering why they're not very popular. Even though they're mych rarer than Minors and other similiar cars, they dont sell for much. I think they're good looking cars and they have a cave of a boot! Also a bigger engine than earlier classics. Anyone have any opinions on them or owned one?

Re: Morris Oxfords
Many, many, years ago someone, possibly my old dad, told me they have a Bakelite gear that drives the distributor which has a tendency to fail.
They are very nice cars though, a bit upmarket from a Minor.
I bet gear machined out of Nylon or some other plastic would be fine.

Isn't that the later A55/60? The big boot flared rear wing type car?

It's actually the later mkIV i'm looking at. The earlier MO searies are even rarer but still dont command a very high price. The a55/a60 models were the Austin versions. They are popular as bangers. Along with volvo amazons and rover p4's. 2 of my other favourite classics. the swines.

I owned one. Never again. They're very pretty but the engine is awful, the 1098 is much more responsive than the 1600 b series. They also rust in the most appauling way imaginable. I layed mine up over water in a garage, and the chassis literally turned to dust. The inner wings also rust away, but you don't notice it instill the outer Wing starts to bubble. By which time the car needs major surgery, a good steel wing for a mk VI will set you back 300+ for that very reason. The interior is a lovely place to be though.

Re: Morris Oxfords
I owned an Oxford Series MO and did a complete rebuild on the engine. It is almost exactly like the MM only everything is bigger. Certainly no plastic parts in there. Later Oxfords were fitted with various Austin/Morris B series engines, 1489cc, 1622cc and one of mine got an 1800 from an MGB.MarkyB wrote:Many, many, years ago someone, possibly my old dad, told me they have a Bakelite gear that drives the distributor which has a tendency to fail.

Re: Morris Oxfords
I own ( with my dad ) an MO the problem is that it has a fibre ring gear to make it quiet, that does fail / wear out, but the owners club has made replacements in steel. Although you can still get second hand one with the fibre gears still in good order.
My grandad had a later oxford only becuase he bumped it on the test drive and felt he should buy it.. he never liked it apparently.
